Welcome
to The Sacred Prostitute documentary's
art and music
In the documentary, we selected much of the background art and music from several special contemporary artists. Their creations are integral to a broad understanding of ancient and modern "teachers of sacred sexuality," my definition of what many writings have termed the "sacred prostitute."
Definitely explore the websites of these creative musicians and artists. Some of the music and art is available for purchase directly from the creators.

FILMMAKER
Together, Sarah Sher and I created this documentary. She took my vision of spirituality, sexuality, and energy and crafted it into a visual form. For this project, I knew I would need a filmmaker who would not be blown away by wide variations of sexual expression and was not coming from a "porn genre" consciousness. At the same time, I wanted a filmmaker who was deeply into a spiritual/meditative/ceremonial path. Sometimes calling Sarah the "Little Buddha," I felt she was perfect for this project. In the several evolutions of the documentary, Sarah was a major contributor. I am deeply grateful to her for presenting my vision so meaningfully.
MUSICIANS
ARVEL BIRD
The documentary's theme song is Arvel's CETAN LUTAH (RED-TAIL HAWK) on his ANIMAL TOTEMS CD. I first heard this song as I entered a Tucson pow-wow while he was performing the song live. His KEYA (TURTLE) song is the background music for the SunDance section. Arvel founded Singing Wolf Records and is a Shivwit Paiute violin/flute player blending traditional and contemporary music.
Jillian's ANGEL AMONG US recording from her CD, JILLIAN SPEER, is what you hear at the end of the documentary. The lyrics are one of the best descriptions of a sexual initiator/healer/ceremonialist/shaman I have heard. Jillian is a not-yet-so-discovered talent of the caliber of Nora Jones. And Alicia Keys, too.
Several places in the documentary, we use background music from Kutira and Raphael's LIKE AN ENDLESS RIVER CD. Being tantra teachers also, they have created a wide variety of beautiful meditational music celebrating sex and spirit.
PAINTERS/ILLUSTRATORS
Richard became a subtle but integral part of the documentary with his paintings below, several maps and illustrations (not shown below), and his voice as narrator. One of the major sacred-prostitute roles is to transform the consciousness of the whole culture, and Richard's art does this profoundly. He expresses his comprehension of the interweaving of the sexual and the spiritual throughout his paintings. Through these, we were able to convey much more clearly the archetypal nature of the sacred prostitute. Moreover, he painted the Mary Magdalene cover image for the WOMEN OF THE LIGHT book.

Erica is an earthy, untamable spirit and artist. Only a few selections of her spiritual erotic art appear in this documentary, but I encourage you to explore her site as an addendum to the documentary. Similar to Richard Stodart, she profoundly comprehends sex and spirit and is not afraid to celebrate it — as in her WAKING series of paintings.
